Stretching for roughly 37 miles along the Maryland and Virginia coast, Assateague is a wild barrier island where nature still sets the pace. The scenery shifts from sandy beaches and rolling dunes to marshes, forests, and coastal waterways filled with wildlife.
It’s peaceful, windswept, and wonderfully untamed.
You can watch wild horses graze beside the marsh, walk for miles along the Atlantic, paddle quiet waterways, photograph shorebirds, bike through coastal landscapes, and fall asleep to the sound of the ocean—all in the same trip.

Assateague stands out because it offers something completely different from the mountains, canyons, and deserts we often associate with the National Park System.
Its quiet coastal beauty, wildlife, and wide-open spaces also inspired my Assateague Island National Seashore artwork.

Assateague Is More Than Just a Beach
The beach may be the first thing you notice, but Assateague is really a collection of interconnected coastal environments.
Move beyond the shoreline and the landscape changes quickly. Salt marshes spread across the island interior, alive with birds and other wildlife. Forested areas provide shade and shelter. Dunes create a natural barrier between the ocean and the rest of the island.
Each environment has its own personality—and exploring all of them is part of what makes Assateague so interesting.
1. Walk the Beaches
The Atlantic beach is the island’s most recognizable landscape, and for good reason.
Here you'll find miles of open coastline with rolling surf, soft sand, salty air, and plenty of room to wander. The further you walk, the easier it becomes to leave the noise of everyday life behind.
Sometimes the best Assateague activity is the simplest one—walk the shoreline, watch the waves, look for shorebirds, and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.
The beaches are also home to shorebirds including sandpipers, plovers, and terns, making even a simple beach walk a wildlife experience.
2. Explore the Dunes
The dunes are more than beautiful scenery. They form an important natural buffer between the Atlantic beach and the island interior.
Plants such as beach grass, beach heather, and sea rocket help stabilize the sand and create habitat for wildlife.
From the right vantage point, the dunes create some of the most beautiful views on the island, especially when late-day light begins to bring out the texture and shape of the sand.
Early morning and late afternoon light can create strong shadows across the dunes, giving the landscape more depth, texture, and color.
3. Discover the Salt Marshes
The marsh may be one of the most important environments on Assateague.
Salt-tolerant plants including cordgrass, marsh elder, and saltwort create critical habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Look closely and you may spot fiddler crabs, terrapins, ospreys, wading birds, and other coastal species.
The marsh also offers a completely different mood from the beach. The surf disappears into the distance, and the landscape becomes quieter, calmer, and full of subtle movement.
4. See the Wild Horses
For many visitors, seeing Assateague's wild horses is the moment they've been waiting for.
The horses roam freely across portions of the island and can sometimes be seen near roads, beaches, dunes, and marshes.
Give the horses plenty of room. Never approach, touch, or feed them. Watching from a respectful distance protects both you and the animals.
And keep your camera ready. Few scenes feel more distinctly Assateague than a horse walking through the dune grass with the Atlantic coast stretching out behind it.
5. Hike or Bike the Island
Assateague is an easy place to explore at a slower pace.
Walking and biking allow you to experience details that are easy to miss from a car—the movement of marsh grasses, birds lifting from the wetlands, the smell of salt air, and the changing light across the dunes.
Trails and routes through the island connect visitors with several different habitats, including marshes, coastal forest, and dune environments.

Equipment rentals may be available from businesses in the surrounding area, or experienced paddlers can bring their own gear.
The island feels completely different from the water. You move quietly, see wildlife from a new perspective, and experience parts of the landscape that most visitors never do.
7. Spend the Night
If your schedule allows, don't just visit Assateague.
Stay.
Camping lets you experience the island after many day visitors have gone home. Evening light settles across the marsh. The air cools. The Atlantic becomes the soundtrack. And in the morning, you're already right where you wanted to be.
Step out of your tent, smell the salt air, hear the surf, and start looking for horses before breakfast.
Camping options are available in the Assateague area, but availability, regulations, and seasonal conditions can vary. During popular summer periods, planning ahead is especially important.
Assateague for Photographers and Wildlife Lovers
For photographers, Assateague is a remarkably rich environment because so much changes throughout the day.
Morning light over the marsh can feel completely different from afternoon light on the dunes. Clouds move quickly over the Atlantic. Wildlife appears unexpectedly. And the island's uncluttered landscapes lend themselves to strong, simple compositions.
